Computers that were installed in the Mars Rover Sprit unexpectedly reboot twice over the weekend. The little rover completed its 90 missions over five years ago and has still been going strong. Technicians are evaluating the data that the mars rover sent back to see if they can determine why the rover’s computer restarted itself. With no way to send a replacement motherboard FedEx to Mars NASA hopes that they will be able to work on a patch that will allow the rover to continue its science mission. This will not be the first long distance tech support call NASA has made to the Rover, as parts wear out the routinely have to develop software updates the prevent the rover from damaging its self.

NASA Updates shuttle with glass cockpits. In an effort to improve the safety of the astronauts NASA has been upgrading the Shuttle Fleet to Glass cockpits. Meaning they have installed computer screens in the place of dials and gages. NASA wants to give astronauts more information quickly because the page through the screens to get the relative information instead of having to look at different spots in the cockpit.

The iPhone is facing stiff competition from Samsung, Palm, Blackberry, and HTC. The other companies seem to be banking on the QWERTY keyboard that is built into most of their devices. Also they are adding higher resolution screens. There hope is that the business world will not be swayed by the coolness factor of the iPhone and continue to look at productivity. The phone makers are also pointing out that they do not approve the apps before they are able to be installed onto their phones. 

This article takes an in depth look at power use in the data center. There are to emerging companies that are offering their consulting services to Data Centers to evaluate and ultimately implement suggested solutions that reduce the carbon footprint of the Data Center. Also in the article it states that only about one third of the power a data center uses actually goes to powering the hardware, the rest is spent on cooling, lighting and powering the grid (lost power in power strips and converters). The article did not give the prices or average cost savings that the consulting companies produced.

This article reviles that Google will now start to factor in locations when giving results.  Through IP registration Google has a good idea of where the search originated from so it is now going to start ranking result that are closer to your IP address location higher. This has a lot of advantages in displaying relevant result for example if one lived in Indianapolis and did a search for “Race Tracks” the Indianapolis Motor Speedway most likely will have more relevance then the Daytona International Speedway there for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway will be higher up in the search. Mobile cell users will be triangulated by a GPS service through there cell carrier.

Skype’s iPhone App may force the FCC to make a decision on net neutrality and whether or not it applies to cell phones carriers. Skype offered an app that allows users to make VoIP calls but Apple required the Skype App to be limited in a way so that it only use WiFi and not the Cell phone carries data service.  The article goes on to quote that AT&T expects its venders not to facilitate competition. The End Users are asking whether or not this is in violation of Net Neutrality because the cell phones carries advertise their data packages as being able to access the internet. 

Microsoft has decided to increases the speed of the demise of Vista by offering a deal to the end user, to upgrade to Window 7 at no cost.

There is a catch the end user must have purchased Vista after July 1, 2009.  

The article went on to say that users of Vista Home would be upgraded to Windows 7 Home (same for business and ultimate). OEM sellers of Vista would be able to offer the same upgrade so that people would not wait to buy a new computer until it came with Windows 7 pre loaded.
